Making controlled cuts to reduce astigmatism and bring the shape of the cornea to as close as a round shape like a football – to improve sight.
At times, after corneal transplant, particularly after deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) and penetrating keratoplasty (PK, full thickness corneal graft), when all stitches are removed, the shape of the corneal graft / transplant is not round. Precise semi-circular cuts are made in the correct axis to bring the shape as close to round as possible. This allows for better fitting of contact lenses if needed, and reduces the power of glasses that may be required to attain the best potential vision.
